Early Life

Born in Karachi, lived there till she turned 10 years old.

Family was very fond of music; both parents had a beautiful voice.

First exposure to music at the age of 6, to Jeevanpuri, was through a teacher at the Ghansham Art Center, a thriving art center in Karachi.

Moved to Lahore at the age of 12.

Parents recognized Sarah Zaman’s gifted voice and her sisters’, Naila Riaz’s, talent to dance. (Medalist of All Pakistan Students Competitions).

The journey of ilm-e-mausiqi began from Alhamra Arts Council, Lahore

Career

1992-1996

Lahore Grammar School M.M. ALAM Road, Created the syllabi for and rigorously trained 150 students of grade 3, 4 and 5 in traditional classical music for 4 years - this was the first time ever that classical music was taught formally at the primary school level in Pakistan. Curated a live orchestra of students and taught them sufi kalam and Ragas of the morning (Layyah), afternoon (Durga) and night (Bhopali).

1996

Ali Institute of Education, Introduced a MUSIC PROGRAM for Teacher Training, based on traditional classical music & poetry.

National College of Arts, Visiting Faculty to teach Shudh Sangeet in the History and Heritage Course for the FOUNDATION YEAR.

2000-2005

National College of Arts, Originated the idea of and partnered with Sanjan Nagar Institute of Arts and Philosophy (SIPA) to execute the first ever department of musicology at the National College of Arts.

early 90s

History and Heritage Program Lahore Arts Forum (LEAF)Has been one of the firsts to deliver live performances, talks and lectures on classical music at LEAF since its inception in 1989.

2000

National College of Arts, Visiting faculty MA (Hons) Visual Arts for SASA (Seminars on Arts Of South Asia), Current Seminar/ Lecture/ lecture demonstrations conducted on traditional South Asian music, its history, evolution, philosophy, technique & practice.

2006 – PRESENT

Developed an Original Special and Comprehensive Course called Music Analysis; Analytical Listening of South Asia Classical Music that bridges Theory with practice.
